Why are you homeschooling?
You are going to question why you are doing this to yourselves every single day. Here
is a peek at what our motivation is, why we chose this route, and what helps us
stick to it when the going gets rough. Take a look, and perhaps use this as blueprint
for your own family home school compass.
OUR OBJECTIVES
Here is why we do what we do.
>To be obedient to the calling our Lord has laid on our hearts.
until He calls us to do otherwise,
we are in this for the long haul, PreK through High school graduation.
This means we are schooling in a 12 year window, and there is less emphasis on
grade level performance. Therefore we know our motivation, when hiccups in stamina happen
(kids or parents), we look here to see WHY ON EARTH we would choose
this daily torture, um, educational option.
>Focus on educating the human being, with emphasis on the adult they are destined to become.
Math is important however, compassion, discernment and identity are crucial.
If a loved one is in need, if we are blessed by an unexpected visitor, if the weather is just too;
cold, hot, ugly, exceptional, beautiful, then the schedule can adjust for life.
>Remember that our home is different from every other home.
I am unique.
My kids are unique.
My physical house is unique.
I cannot, nor should I try to, duplicate every detail of the latest homeschooling trend,
or the homeschool mom up the road that apparently has it all together.
I aim to strive to learn from and connect with others, applying what I glean to my life.
This is not Pinterest, I have humans in my home not predictable, programmable robots.
When the "what if’s" crawl into my mind, I have a plan.
I pray for discernment and guidance.
Am I on the right track? Am I eyeing the newest trends and other’s success’ and
comparing my unique situation with one that is dramatically different?
Is it time to try something completely new, or just tweak what we do a bit here and there?
I am often reminded that the main thing I strive for is a family of compassionate,
intelligent, kind, hard working adults. People that have a good head on their shoulders
and a willingness to see the good in others and a will to fight for what is right.
To lift up the underdog, and champion the brave among us.
If they do not get a “complete” education, if I miss a “t” or an “i”, my children can see
what they are missing for the goals they have. They are employable and can get training
or education and move toward their dreams and callings.
Our society’s view of success will not define what I am working toward.
There are holes in every education that a child can get. Every one.
I will not be held mentally captive and made to stay awake at night wondering what I am doing wrong.
I focus on our family, the people of character within it and strive to encourage them to
better the world and communities they are in.
So far it is working just splendidly, and I really like these people.
